Volunteers are needed to stuff and address envelopes with a letter targeted to township residents which list the endorsed Democratic candidates for the November 2nd election. Packets (letters, voter lists, and envelopes) along with stamps will be distributed on Sunday, October 3, from noon to 2 pm at the township’s Old Rec Center parking lot. If you cannot make it on October 3rd, email maryfmcintyre56@gmail.com to arrange a packet delivery or pick up.

Why Is The November 2nd Election So Important?

Why Is The November 2nd Election So Important?

This November 2nd, we will elect new judges to Pennsylvania’s three statewide appellate courts – the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Superior Court, and Commonwealth Court, as well as ten judges to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.

Recent history shows that Pennsylvania’s appellate courts play a leading role in the protection of our democracy. For example, in 2018 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court – which has a Democrat majority – mandated that the Commonwealth’s U.S. congressional districts be redrawn fairly to closely reflect the partisan composition of the state, after finding that they had been unfairly and unlawfully gerrymandered to favor Republicans.

More recently, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court handed down dismissals of lawsuits filed by the Trump Administration and other Republicans that contained baseless claims of widespread election fraud.  Notably, this included reversals of decisions of our Commonwealth Court, which is believed to be the only court in the nation that made a ruling in the Trump Administration’s favor since the 2020 Presidential election.  Notably, the Commonwealth Court currently has a 7-2 Republican majority.  In short, if not for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversing the Commonwealth Court’s decision, Donald Trump might very well be President today.

Looking ahead, voter restriction laws are gaining momentum in Republican-controlled states across the U.S.  In Pennsylvania, where Republicans currently control both the House and Senate, such voting restrictions could also soon be passed.  Our best line of defense to prevent unconstitutional voter restriction laws from being enacted is likely to include the Pennsylvania Commonwealth and Supreme Courts.

That is why it is critical that Democrats turn out to vote for Democrat judges this November 2nd.  While the courts do not make laws, they do interpret them, and the law’s interpretation can be the difference in maintaining our democracy, where everyone has an equal opportunity to vote and be heard.

PENNSYLVANIA WILL BE CENTER STAGE FOR ELECTION 2022

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Pennsylvania will be center stage in the 2022 battle for the U.S. Senate, when voters will decide who will succeed Republican Senator Pat Toomey.

Having announced his retirement, Toomey is one of 34 senators across the country whose seat will be contested in 2022.  His seat, however, is one of only two seats considered by many as a “toss up,” the other being in North Carolina where Republican Senator Richard Burr is also retiring.  As such, with the U.S. Senate currently split equally between Democrats and Republicans, the chance to elect a Democrat to fill Toomey’s seat presents a golden opportunity for the Democratic Party, and the outcome will be a critical factor in President Biden being able to advance his political policies and agenda.

In order to be prepared for what will undoubtedly be a long and highly-contested senatorial campaign, the USC Democratic Committee has announced a $10,000 fundraising goal to make certain that the committee has the needed resources to present its case to township residents via letters, flyers, and other means of information dissemination.  The money raised will go toward the printing and mailing of campaign literature to help galvanize support for Pennsylvania’s Democratic senatorial candidate.

“We’ve had excellent results in the past with volunteers personally printing and dropping off literature to residents’ homes and/or personally paying for the printing and mailing of such literature,” said Upper St. Clair Committee Chair Mary McIntyre. “We are hoping that with this fundraising campaign we can recruit more volunteers and donors to help us expand our informational efforts going forward.  If every Democrat in USC would simply donate $10, we could guarantee that we would have enough money to do our part in electing a Democrat to replace Senator Toomey in 2022.”

Please help us meet our fundraising goals and make plans to attend our September 12th picnic fundraiser at South Park.

Stand Up For S.B.1!

Congressman Conor Lamb will be stopping by the 4pm South Hills rally in Mt. Lebanon to thank us for standing up for voting rights and raising awareness about the importance of the For The People Act. PA Supreme Court nominee Maria McLaughlin will also be joining us at the rally. H. R. 1, the comprehensive voter protection bill, passed in the House of Representatives months ago. But the companion bill in the Senate, S. B. 1, has been filibustered by Republicans and now stands in peril of not even coming up for debate. In response, more than 70 voting rights and allied organizations have launched Deadline For Democracy, a massive cross-movement mobilization, to show senators from all 50 states that there is overwhelming grassroots support for voting rights and the elimination of dark money and gerrymandering. There are honk-and-wave sidewalk rallies planned on Friday, July 2, in the South, East, and North areas of the region (note: each rally is at a different time). Please join at whichever location is most convenient (or locate another event on the Indivisible map). There will be an event in Mt. Lebanon at the corner of Washington and Cochran Roadson Friday, July 2 at 4:00 pm. We’ll be forming a human billboard so that passing motorists can read our message: PASS SENATE BILL 1 FOR THE PEOPLE ACT. We’ll need 8 people to hold signs, one for each word (signs will be provided). If you bring your own sign, we recommend short, easy-to-read messages like STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION, END GERRYMANDERING, NO MORE DARK MONEY. Flags and other props are welcome. The event is rain or shine, except in the case of dangerous weather (lightning or heavy rain). You can just show up, but if you want to participate in the human billboard or receive updates about the event, please sign up here. If you live in the eastern part of the city or its suburbs, please join the rally by Indivisible Forest Hills at 5:00 pm at the corner of Ardmore Blvd and Braddock Roads in Forest Hills, PA 15221. If you live in the northern part of the city or its suburbs, please join the rally by Progress PA at 3:00 pm at the Wexford Post Office, 10675 Perry Highway, Wexford, PA 15090.
